After four long years, Van’s events go off with a bang.

Thousands of people lined Vancouver’s seawalls last night to take in Canada Day fireworks, which until last year had taken a four-year hiatus because of violence at the annual celebration.

The 25-minute show was set on two barges in the Burrard Inlet so viewers in several communities could watch the skies light up.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of cyclists took to the streets for the fourth annual Yaletown Grand Prix bike race.

Mary-Anne McKinnon, who lives in Kitsilano, said watching the cyclists was a great way to spend the afternoon.

“It’s a nice day, fast track, good-looking guys,” she said, adding that because the track is a short loop, you can see the racers coming quickly.

“They’re going unbelievably fast.”

“It’s a great venue,” added Susan Copland. “And a beautiful day for it.”

The top cyclist in the men’s professional category was Svein Tuft, who will be competing for Canada in the summer Olympics in Beijing. The winner in the professional women’s category was Gillian Moody.
