Mayor Peter Kelly wasn’t allowed out to play for Canada Day.

Kelly, 51, just returned home from hospital Monday after abdominal pain forced him to go to the emergency room last Tuesday.

He was later diagnosed with diverticulitis, a digestive condition that can be treated with antibiotics and monitoring his diet.

Downtown Coun. Dawn Sloane attended Halifax’s official Canada Day ceremony on behalf of the mayor yesterday.

When talking to the mayor that morning, she said that he wanted to get out of the house, but his family members hid his cellphone, keys and shoes.

“As you know he’s like the Energizer Bunny — he goes and goes and goes,” Sloane said about Kelly, who’s been in office since 2000.

“We made an executive decision that he’s to stay home and rest. We want our mayor well.”

Kelly, who’s been in office since 2000, said Sunday he doesn’t expect to take off much recovery time.
