Jefferson leads Jazz to win over Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Al Jefferson had 21 points and a season-high 15 rebounds, and Gordon Hayward added 23 points as the Utah Jazz snapped a three-game losing streak with a 98-88 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night.

Hayward shot 8 of 12 from the field, part of a 51 per cent shooting performance by the Jazz on the night. Paul Millsap finished with 16 for Utah, shooting 7 of 11. Raja Bell had 10 points.

Rudy Gay led Memphis with 22 points, while Mike Conley (six assists) and Marc Gasol scored 17 apiece.

Utah's lead was only 69-66 heading into the final period, but the Jazz were 12 of 16 from the field and caused six Memphis turnovers in the final period to pull away.

Utah was able to pull away in the fourth quarter by not only forcing Memphis into turnovers, but getting to the rim on offence. On three occasions out of the halfcourt set, Derrick Favors was able to score on alley-oop dunks.

That and Hayward's outside shooting helped Utah rebuild its lead to 93-84 with 2:40 left. At that point, Memphis had no answer.

Utah built an early lead and carried a 46-40 advantage into intermission.

Memphis got off to a terrible start, missing its first eight shots, and was still shooting 2 of 11 as Utah built an early double-digit lead, eventually reaching 13 points.

Memphis would score the last eight points of the opening quarter to get back in the game.

But the misfiring continued for Memphis in the half as the Grizzlies shot 35 per cent for the first two quarters.

The Jazz seemed to be in much better control, and their 45 per cent shooting was accurate compared to Memphis. Part of the shooting performance included Utah's five starters going a combined 17 of 27 in the half.

Starters Hayward, Millsap, Jefferson, Bell and Devin Harris ended the night hitting 33 of their 56 shots.

Hayward and Jefferson had 14 each to lead the Jazz in the first half, while Gasol scored 10 for Memphis before halftime.

Memphis took its first lead on a three-point play by Conley with about five minutes left in the third. But it was Gay who sparked the rally with 10 early points in the period.

As the game got closer, Memphis was having trouble with turnovers. Utah was getting on the glass, and Bell, who was scoreless in the first half, began connecting on his jumper.

Utah scored six unanswered points late in the period and carried a 69-66 lead into the final period.

Notes: Memphis wore gold and green throwback jerseys representing the old Memphis Tams of the American Basketball Association. The colour scheme was because the Tams were owned by Charlie Finley of the Oakland A's. Tams stood for Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi — the three states that comprise the area around Memphis. ... Memphis G Tony Allen returned to the starting lineup. Allen missed three games with a sore left hip and knee, and came off the bench when he returned Friday against Indiana. ... The Jazz are 6-0 when they score better than 50 per cent and 8-1 when holding opponents to less than 90 points.

LONDON - Primed for a brief flirtation with the Champions League, Thierry Henry could give Arsenal the ideal parting gift by helping the English club to victory over AC Milan in the standout last-16 match in Europe's elite competition this week.

Wednesday's first leg at the San Siro will be Henry's last match in a relatively successful loan spell at Arsenal before he returns to the New York Red Bulls ahead of the new Major League Soccer season.

If the veteran French striker is looking for a perfect way to go, scoring at a ground where he claimed a hat trick for Arsenal against Inter Milan nine years ago wouldn't be too far off the mark.

"He finished the story of the legend in the championship," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said, after seeing Henry snatch a stoppage-time winner against Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday.

"I hope he will add some in the Champions League on Wednesday."

Milan has been eliminated at this stage of the Champions League by English clubs in three of the past four seasons, with Arsenal beating the Italian champions 2-0 at the San Siro in 2008 in its smooth passage into the last eight.

After a hiatus of two months since the end of the group stage, defending champion Barcelona will welcome the return of the Champions League as it prepares for a trip to Bayer Leverkusen.

Barca is struggling to live with a fierce pace set by archrival Real Madrid in the Spanish league, with Jose Mourinho's side 10 points clear at the top and already looking safe bets to reclaim the title.

However with the likes of Argentina maestro Lionel Messi and Spain playmaker Xavi Hernandez in its team, Barcelona still appears the side to beat in Europe as it goes in search of a fourth Champions League title in seven years.

"The Champions League is a prestigious competition, the most prestigious. We'll do everything to win it," Barcelona defender Gerard Pique said.

The other first-leg matches this week see French club Lyon host APOEL, the surprise package from Cyprus, on Tuesday while Benfica visits Zenit St. Petersburg on Wednesday.

Milan heads into the Arsenal match in high spirits, having regained its position atop Serie A with a 2-1 victory at Udinese on Saturday and with its lengthy list of absent players finally starting to relent.

Christian Abbiati, Alessandro Nesta, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Alexandre Pato and Mathieu Flamini have all returned to training and are likely to be available, while Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back from a domestic ban.

"We really want it," Milan goalkeeper Marco Amelia said. "In the last few years, we have always gone out against an English team. We want to do well, the Champions league gives you really great feelings."

Unlike Milan, Arsenal isn't competing for its domestic title but has the Premier League's top scorer in Netherlands striker Robin van Persie.

The London club, which should start with Henry on the bench despite his heroics at Sunderland, will be without Per Mertesacker after the Germany defender damaged ankle ligaments at the weekend.

Wenger is keen to grab an away goal ahead of the return leg at Emirates Stadium in three weeks.

"The European system is organized to reward audacious action away from home," he said. "When you go away in the Champions League, you have to score.

"The best way to score is play in an offensive way and we will try to do that."

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola's main injury doubt is midfielder Sergio Busquets, who has missed two games but will travel with the team.

Guardiola will also look for more from Messi, who is the joint top goalscorer in this season's Champions League with six goals but has looked below par in 2012 with goals harder to come by than usual.

Leverkusen approaches the match in poor form, having one just one of its last six games in the Bundesliga to slip to sixth place.

APOEL is the first Cypriot team to reach this stage of the competition but is no longer the unknown quantity it was at the start of group play.

It comes up against a Lyon team which has qualified for the last 16 for the ninth season running.

"It's wrong to compare APOEL with big European teams," APOEL coach Ivan Jovanovic said. "We consider our course in Europe as something normal. A lot of things have to fall into place to achieve something like this."

OAKLAND, Calif. - Monta Ellis had 33 points and seven assists, David Lee added 15 points and 13 rebounds and the Golden State Warriors beat the Houston Rockets 106-97 on Sunday night for their second straight victory over a Western Conference playoff contender.

Rookie reserve Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry had 14 points apiece and each made some big shots late to help the Warriors upset another top team. Golden State also won at Denver on Thursday night.

Kevin Martin started to break out of a recent shooting slump with 28 points and Luis Scola had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Rockets, whose three-game winning streak ended. Houston is 3-2 on its current road stretch and has a chance to head home with a winning trip Tuesday at Memphis.

The Warriors started to pull away in the fourth quarter with a mix of substitutes and starters.

Ekpe Udoh came off the bench and finished with a strong layup at the rim, drawing a foul on Chase Budinger to convert a three-point play. Thompson followed with a three-pointer on the next possession, Lee added a put-back dunk and a three-point play and Golden State opened up a 93-80 lead with 7:24 remaining.

Too late and too much for Houston to comeback.

The Rockets scored six straight capped by Patrick Patterson's tip to quickly close within seven and give Golden State a brief scare. With the game starting to slip back within reach, a familiar force for the Warriors made sure it didn't.

Curry dribbled along the baseline and finished with an acrobatic, one-handed reverse layup underneath the rim despite getting sent tumbling to the hardwood by Scola. Curry made the free throw for the three-point play to put Golden State back in front by 10 and all but seal the victory.

The two franchises suddenly tied together by a similar player move tried to make their own marks.

New York sensation Jeremy Lin was waived by Golden State in December after splitting last season between the Warriors and the NBA Development League. Houston picked the point guard up for a couple of weeks before cutting him, and the Knicks decided to give him a look.

All Lin has done since is help New York to five straight victories and engulfed the NBA in swift and stunning fashion. So much so that Rockets coach Kevin McHale acknowledged he went to a Bay Area sports bar Saturday night to watch Lin lead the Knicks past the Minnesota Timberwolves, where McHale had previously coached.

Sunday's matchup had little of the same intrigue.

After going scoreless for almost three minutes to start the game, the Rockets scored 13 straight — including the last six points by Scola — to take a 13-5 lead. Martin also made 3 of his first 4 from beyond the arc to put Houston ahead by nine points later in the first quarter.

The Warriors whittled the deficit down in a hurry behind some strong three-point shooting of their own. Golden State made eight of 13 from long range before the half, taking an eight-point lead during one stretch with Curry leading the sparkling shooting display.

Both teams settled down and neither created much separation until Golden State pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Notes: McHale (TNT) and Golden State's Mark Jackson (ABC/ESPN) both left the broadcast table for NBA head coaching jobs this season. Asked what enticed them to leave broadcasting, McHale said: "I like the butterflies before the game. I like being in the fight. There's nothing like being in the scrap."... Warriors F Dominic McGuire was inactive with left knee soreness.

LIBREVILLE, Gabon - Ivory Coast's stars failed to shine on a gloomy night for the country's "golden generation" as Zambia's team spirit overcame the Ivorians' individual talent in Sunday's African Cup final.

Captain Didier Drogba, Gervinho and Kolo Toure all missed penalties, and Yaya Toure and Salomon Kalou didn't last 90 minutes after being substituted as Zambia snatched the trophy from tournament favourite Ivory Coast's grip with an 8-7 win in a shootout after neither side scored in regulation or extra time.

Ivory Coast had appeared to have an iron grip on this year's African Cup.

It swept to the final with five straight wins without conceding a goal, but Drogba missed a 70th-minute spot-kick and fellow English Premier League players Gervinho and Kolo Toure then failed in the penalty shootout.

It was another difficult night for the so-called golden generation, which has now lost two finals, a semifinal and a quarterfinal in the last four tournaments and threatens to be one of the best teams to go without the major prize to match its ability.

Despite all its top names, and imposing form up to the final, the country still hasn't won the African title since its lone triumph in 1992.

"It's difficult when you take part in a competition and you don't concede any goals and score nine goals ... it is difficult," coach Francois Zahoui said. "You feel the Cup is within your reach. I think we'll take stock of this later on."

Zahoui promised that any decisions on the future of the Ivorian lineup, with Drogba now 33 and Kolo Toure 30, would only be made later with "a calm mind," but followers must be wondering if the group will ever end its drought — and if change is needed.

"Sometimes they are just bad results and you have to accept them," Zahoui said, defending the efforts of his team. "We know we could lose on penalties and the other team could lose. It's Russian roulette, so it's not really dishonourable.

"We have a lot of disappointment ... but we're not going to be moving players (out) because of that."

Drogba sent his regular-time penalty way over the crossbar, Kolo Toure had his saved in the shootout and Gervinho's miss was the decisive error that sealed another Ivory Coast failure.

Kalou, meanwhile, was ineffective and left soon after halftime while midfield playmaker Yaya Toure had a subdued night after missing a good early chance and was taken off before extra time.

"We'll have to see what has to be done. If we have to change some players we'll see," Zahoui said.

___

Follow Gerald Imray at http://twitter.com/GeraldImrayAP

Proteas to avoid verbal jousting with NZ

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - South Africa cricket coach Gary Kirsten says his players won't be drawn into a verbal battle with New Zealand during their tour starting Friday.

Kirsten said his players would concentrate on performance and had the discipline to resist verbal sparring, even in goaded by the New Zealanders.

When South Africa last toured New Zealand eight years ago, the Kiwis under captain Stephen Fleming launched a deliberate campaign of verbal provocation aimed at Proteas captain Graeme Smith. The tactic unsettled Smith and might be used again by the New Zealanders whose confidence is high after a series of one-sided wins over Zimbabwe.

The last encounter between the teams, when New Zealand eliminated South Africa from the World Cup in Dhaka last March, was also acrimonious. New Zealand's Kyle Mills and Daniel Vettori and South Africa's Faf du Plessis were fined for "inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players".

But Kirsten told a news conference on Monday he was confident his players were could respond appropriately to anything New Zealand may throw at them.

"We feel if we play really good cricket and don't say anything we're going to win more games than we're going to lose," he said.

"Our focus will be on what we're going to do. If New Zealand feel they want to get verbal with us then that's their business. At the end of the day the side that plays better cricket is going to win."

As he was speaking, and as if to underline his point, a ball struck by South African allrounder Wayne Parnell crashed through the window of the conference room at Wellington's Basin Reserve, missing Kirsten and Twenty20 captain A.B. de Villiers by meters.

De Villiers, who will captain South Africa in the two Twenty20 and three one-day matches before Smith takes over for the three tests, said he expected a fiery series.

"There always is a little bit of this and that when we play against New Zealand," he said. "Especially the last time we met at the World Cup there were a few things that went down there. They won the game and we've got a lot to prove in this series.

"I'm sure the game will be played hard on the field but we're friends with most of the guys off the field."

South Africa will open it's tour with a Twenty20 warmup match against Canterbury on Wednesday before meeting New Zealand in the first T20 international at Wellington on Friday.
