Affordability will be at the heart of a new review of B.C. Ferries.
After being inundated with public complaints about rising fares and cost hikes, commissioner Gord Macatee announced he’ll undergo a comprehensive review of the Coastal Ferries Act and B.C. Ferries over the course of the next six months.
He will then recommend changes to the provincial government.
“From the feedback I’ve been getting from the public, there’s a strong belief that these are opportunities to save money in the system,” Macatee said. “People are focused on the fare issue and affordability. I hear a lot of fear in what the future holds.”
Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom welcomed the review and said the government will take a serious look at any recommendations.
“I believe we have a good ferry system, but it’s reaching the point that where people say it’s no longer affordable to them,” he said. “That’s huge, especially for people living in coastal communities.”
