The status handbag is totally yesterday's news. So why does it seem like the It shoe is as popular as ever? It's an anomaly in today's climate. The days of top selling superstar It bags such as the Fendi Spy, Yves Saint Laurent Muse, and Chloe Paddington died shortly after the "Sex and the City" finale aired. And yet I've been seeing the Louis Vuitton spicy sandal, Christian Louboutin Dillian heel and Yves Saint Laurent cage boot (and countless knockoff versions) everywhere for months on end.
Sasha Charnin Morrison, fashion director of Us Weekly says that luxury shoes are more attainable in this climate than their handbag counterparts. "You look at a shoe and it might run anywhere from $98 to $800 dollars whereas handbags can cost as much as $4,000, $5,000 or $7,000. The shoe is a bit more attainable," she explains.
Sasha also attributes the statement shoe's popularity to the fact that it's still the most important aspect of the outfit. "No matter what's going on, the shoe is always the key item. And it's universally appealing because you don't have to be a certain weight or dress size to wear it," she adds.
A fashion industry friend of mine, meanwhile, speculates that the whole notion of It-dom, is dead and that the Spicy/Cage/Dillian moment is the phenomenon's last gasp before croaking for good. But all I can think about is fall's coming thigh-high boot craze. Only time will tell.

Agreed with uncouth! With all the faux fur options out there, there is no reason to wear the real thing!
