Dinner for two with drinks: $55
Signature Dish: Beef goulash ($18.50)
Doing any activity in breathtaking Lake Louise isn’t cheap. Gas, accommodation, parks and lift passes all add up. So it’s a relief to find comparatively reasonable prices at the Outpost Pub in the exclusive Post Hotel.
In contrast to its fine-dining, big-view sister upstairs which enforces a dress code, the basement pub welcomes jeans and ski gear. They share the same kitchen which cooks fancy entrées with the same precision as the pared-down pub fare.
A special of prime rib (an unheard of $24.50) is outstanding, perfectly marbled and medium rare with a plump baked potato, steamed veg, and personal gravy boat.
The Post burgers ($16.50) are the best I’ve had in a long time. One comes with a huge, juicy patty, melted gruyere, pan-fried mushrooms, generous pickle slices , butter lettuce and red onions. An ample, fresh bun — which is key — held everything together nicely.
Skinny fries (McDonald’s-style) share the plate with a side pasta salad with shredded carrots and raisins (not McDonald’s-style).
Grab a seat by the wood-burning fireplace and tuck into a heaping plate of Hungarian beef goulash with spatzle and red cabbage ($18.50). Your tummy — and wallet — will thank you.
