Most people wouldn’t think they could conquer their fears simply by staring it in the face — literally.
But that’s exactly what mother-of-two Sue Ritchie did to get over her fear of reptiles just a few months ago and yesterday she was snuggling with a bearded dragon at The Alberta Reptile and Amphibian Show (TARAS).
“Well, my daughters started getting really into reptiles and I guess now it’s kind of a family thing,” she said. “But I was deathly afraid of them before.”
That all changed when Ritchie attended the spring show and was talked into holding a corn snake, which she now considers her favourite scaly skinned pet.
“I think it helped a lot to hold one, and then it just got easier. I think it’s not as bad as it seems and now I just love them. They are so cute and cuddly.”
Teena Tangen of TARAS said the shows are a great way for those afraid of reptiles and amphibians to get over their fears.
“I think once people learn more about the creatures they realize they aren’t so bad after all and it helps get rid of some of those myths they had in the first place,” she told Metro.
