The city is prepared to weather economic difficulties in the near future and is moving forward with a strategy including a massive five-year infrastructure program and investment in core city services.

During his State of the City speech at a luncheon on Wednesday Mayor Dave Bronconnier said the city will invest nearly $2 billion into infrastructure this year and budgeted $6 billion in capital funding over the next five years.

"This strategy will mean that much-needed infrastructure gets built, at the same time as we provide a 'shot in the arm' for our economy,” Bronconnier said.

The city will hire 130 new firefighters and tackle crime by swearing in 300 new officers. Calgary transit will add 300,000 hours of service over the next three years.

It is also expected that the west LRT leg will be open by 2012.
