He’s far from an angry celebrity chef.

Rather than screaming at 20 of SAIT’s cooking school students, Food Network chef David Adjey greeted them with words of encouragement yesterday.

About 25 per cent of culinary SAIT students will compete in September’s WorldSkills competition in Calgary, which is expected to draw 150,000 spectators from around the world and bring in $82 million in economic benefits for the city.

After donning his official white cowboy hat from Mayor Dave Bronconnier and yelling the obligatory “yahoo,” Adjey said his role is to be the ultimate Canadian fan.

“I’d like to see some Canadian fanatics go at it and see the excitement that working in a kitchen is all about,” he said. “I’m the super fan — they give me foam fingers or something.”

The WorldSkills competition isn’t just about cooking. Everything from robotics and automotive technology to electronic engineering, hairdressing and cooking will be on display.

“This is the largest competitive event to take place in Calgary since the 1988 Olympic Winter Games,” said Bronconnier.

“With WorldSkills Calgary 2009 in September, we will once again be showcased on the world stage.”

The competition takes place Sept. 1 to 7 at Stampede Park.
