Ward 8 Ald. John Mar hopes pay phone stickers will help curb drug deals in the booths.
Calgary’s 30 pay phones left on public property will be getting a new addition, and the city hopes it will deter drug deals.
New warning stickers will be placed on public pay phones that warn users that the police will be able to access phone numbers, as well as dates and times of phone calls in investigations of illegal activities.
“This is a notice to drug dealers that it is not acceptable (to use pay phones to make drug deals) and that the City of Calgary is working with the Calgary Police Service to mitigate that and control it,” said Ald. John Mar.
According to Mar there will also be a curfew placed on pay phones, which will only allow pay phones to dial to 9-1-1 in the inner city from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The city wants to remove the anonymity pay phones provide drug dealers when making drug deals, according to Mar.
Mar knows that the stickers and the new curfews won’t stop drug dealers from using pay phones to make drug deals but does think it will deter them.
