The history of slave trading between China and the United States rears its head in modern day Sweden, in Henning Mankel’s latest political crime thriller The Man from Beijing. A single red ribbon is all that remains after the savage slaughter of residents of the Swedish hamlet Hesjövallen. The killings hit close to home for local judge Birgitta Roslin, whose grandparents were two of the victims. When Birgitta finds a diary from the 1800s, it sends her on an international journey where she discovers a plot for vengeance spawned by past ill treatment of Chinese slaves with a solid link to the crime.
