Albertans will know who will lead the financially-strapped Liberal party before Christmas, says a volunteer spokesman with the party.
Party members will begin voting through mail-in ballots in a period of days between Dec. 5 to Dec. 12, said the party after the Liberals’ 130-member board of directors wrapped up a meeting yesterday in Red Deer.
“That means a new leader will be announced by Dec. 13,” said Glenn Rollens, a volunteer spokesman for the Liberals.
A nomination deadline for the party leader has been set for Sept. 30, said Rollens.
It’s been reported the party has been scrambling to make payroll and Taft has been making some cold calls for donations.
Taft also announced plans last week to donate $1,400 a month from his increase in pay to help his party pay staff.
Taft made his resignation official last month during a news conference describing himself as not being a career politician.
Among the Liberal MLAs reportedly interested in putting their names in a leadership race include Edmonton-Centre MLA Laurie Blakeman and Calgary-Currie MLA Dave Taylor.

“A new leader will be announced by Dec. 13.”
