Greetings fashion lovers!
Toronto Fashion Week doesn't officially start until tonight but a few top designers kicked off their shows last week. First up on Thursday night was menswear maestro Philip Sparks recently tapped by Forbes magazine as one of their "10 undiscovered designers on the rise". I've been watching Philip's work for the past few seasons and his Fall 09 collection was another hit. Philip captures a Canadiana look with a polished modern edge - nothing hokey about it. He paired a curling sweater with plaid lined jeans, and a plaid wool cargo coat with jodphurs. I loved his mix of wool, coated cotton and fur - and hope that Canadian guys take note of this rising new star.
Stephen Wong and Kirk Pickersgill, the duo being design label Greta Constantine, showed a blockbuster collection this past Friday that had the crowd buzzing and my team clamouring to photograph. The softspoken duo turned up their signature a notch by pairing neoprene jackets with egg shaped backs or oversized hoods with white latex leggings and gloves. Black mesh was layered over their colourful jerseys, and silver metallic pants were paired with a neoprene vest or fabulous shaggy fur vest. Highlights included a segment of shimmery animal prints (love the voluminous strapless jumpsuit) and feathered accessories strapped to arms, necks and boots. Surprises included the street-chic mini set of looks for guys and the incredible finale of vests made from seatbelt webbing. When I visited the boys at the studio earlier last week, Stephen told me that working with the black industrial strength webbing made his hands bleed. I hate to say it was worth it but the results were spectacular and made this Greta Constantine's finest collection to date.
