I am writing as a concerned Canadian who is appalled by the decision to bail out the Big Three in Canada and the U.S.
I understand the role these companies play in providing jobs, and therefore their role in the greater economy. But I feel it is unjust to support them by taking from the pockets of working Canadians.
Free-market capitalism, as I understand it, dictates that producers must supply a product to the market that meets a demand, thereby securing profit and allowing said producers to remain in the marketplace, independent of government intervention. This is the same fiscal model the Conservative government of Canada endorses as a justification for the failure to address rampant homelessness, poverty and ecological irresponsibility.
Perhaps the government should, rather than handing out taxpayers’ money, suggest that the Big Three work towards developing more affordable, sustainable and marketable products.
