A 34-year-old man is in custody following a brutal home invasion in Mayerthorpe Thursday morning.

A woman awoke in the early morning to find a man gripping a hammer standing in her bedroom doorway.

When she told him to leave, he attacked her, swinging the hammer and slashing her with a utility knife.

The pair struggled and tumbled down a flight of stairs before the attacker choked the woman unconscious.

Before she passed out, the victim’s son awoke and rushed to her aid. The attacker fled the residence.

Police found a suspect  four hours later, walking along the highway.

The woman was rushed to hospital and treated for non-life-threatening slash wounds on her neck.

Police believe the attack was random. Charges are pending.
