A five-time Olympic athlete paid a visit to the students of St. Vladimir Elementary as the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver approaches.

Tim Berrett’s first Olympic competition for race walking was during the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain and he has competed in every Summer Olympics since.

He was one of the torch carriers during the Olympic torch relay in Edmonton last Wednesday and is now visiting schools to share the message of the Olympics.

“I want to share some messages about the Olympic Games and what it’s like to be an athlete,” Berrett said.

Berrett enlightened the students of the amount of hard work and discipline that is required to compete in the Olympic Games and surprised the students with one of the famous Vancouver 2010 Olympic torches.

“The idea is to appreciate the athletes, to better understand the Olympic Games when they’re watching on TV,” said St. Vladimir principal Nicolette Papanicolas.

“They’re very proud that the Olympic Games are taking place in Canada.”
