The Canadian government is putting money into the prevention of injuries, Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq announced yesterday.

“It’s an issue that’s always been on the minds of us who are parents to young children,” Aglukkaq said during a press conference at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Ranch in Edmonton.

Aglukkaq announced that five injury-research teams will be funded through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for a total of $8.2 million over five years.

“Despite our best efforts, accidents are still the leading cause of injury and death, especially for children and young people,” Aglukkaq explained, noting that injuries kill more Canadians between the ages of one and 44 than anything else.

“Our challenge is to reduce that number.”

The five research teams will study child and youth injury prevention, traumatic brain injury and violence, interpersonal traumas, trauma system development and prevention of fall-related injuries in older adults through bioengineering.
