The Kaleido Family Arts Festival launch kicked off yesterday with music, drums, and performances.

This year’s theme, Ignite, pays tribute to the arts as being the starting point for the growth 118 Avenue has experienced since the festival’s inception five years ago.

“We continue to see the streetscape improvement, which is a real structural improvement,” said festival executive producer Christy Morin. “We’ve seen a lot of wonderful young families moving in ... A lot of little restaurants and diners so it’s really reviving.”

Greg McInulty and his family moved into the neighbourhood two years ago and have been going to the festival since.

“I really love that it’s got something for all ages so there’s things that interest my children and there are things that interest me,” said McInulty. “And I love that it’s living art and that you can become part of it.”

Crowds of about 14,000 are expected and although construction is still active on the avenue, the city will ensure the entire site will be safe for the public. For more information go to www.kaleidofest.ca.
