Years ago, Mike Lyons and 30 to 40 other individuals used to “command downtown” on weekends, he said, riding their bikes on the streets and stunting in parking lots.

Now the electrician and avid rider wants to create something more than another basic skate or bike park, some place riders can have fun and train in a safe environment.

Lyons plans on unveiling plans for a bike-skills training facility at the annual Bikeology Festival in June.

The facility will likely be located adjacent to the Alberta Avenue community league on 92 Street and 118 Avenue.

“We’re looking at 100 feet by 40 feet to develop this wooden structure on,” said Lyons. “A series of structures for riders of all levels … and then around the outside, a pump track, a mini-BMX track.”

Lyons said this is another step in revitalizing the area — a way to be “proactive instead of reactive,” as the plans also include a designated area for graffiti as well as a community garden.
