Ottawa NASL coming Monday

Canada's worst kept soccer secret will be finally public very soon. Metro News has learned that Monday the NASL will the announce the addition of another Canadian team to its ranks. NASL commissioner David Downs will be in the Canadian capital to meet with owner of the Ottawa Fury John Pugh and his investors to introduce Ottawa as the newest NASL franchise at a press conference. It is unclear at this point what will become of the Ottawa Fury PDL team but Metro sources confirmed that Ottawa will join the league in 2013 and will play out of Landsdowne Park. For those that don't know the Fury, they've been a stalwart for developing young talent over the last few years and their connection to the community is exactly what makes them so valuable at the D2 level. Hamilton, with the backing of the CFL's Hamilton TigerCats owner Bob Young, and who was also believed to be joining the league in 2013, is no longer a certainty. League sources tell Metro a falling out has occurred between Young and the league and his plans to bring a D2 franchise to Steeltown have stalled. Metro will have more details as they become available and will have either David Downs or John Pugh on the Monday edition of It's Called Football

A few weeks ago, soccer media and supporters alike came out to the Football Factory to tell fans of the beautiful game why local football matters to them and why it should matter to you and those around you. The domestic club game is clearly healthy and on the grow in Canada, but there remains a disconnect between those fans and fans our of national teams. We created this video as a way to inspire fans who love the game, but maybe haven't found a reason to attend national team matches The stories are varied but the message was simple: Get out and support the Canadian national team. After you view this video, please take a moment and send it to five friends who you think would enjoy watching Canada play. Then ask them to send it to five. And so on. If you want embed it on your own site, you can find the embed code here and if you have some objection of linking to CSN , please link to YouTube on all your social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook etc..) There is a week before Canada plays Ecuador in Toronto, and this summer Canada plays USA in Detroit. We're going to be releasing another, longer video before then, but in the meantime, the goal is for the grassroots supporters of our game to take this video out and use it to as a way to turn casuals, who may be sitting on the fence about supporting Canada, into full-on Voyageurs. Allez les Rouge. ___ Thank you to everyone who came out and made this possible. If your footage didn't make this video it will be in the second. And thank you especially to the people that slaved over hours of people pouring their hearts out to turn it into something with a message.

Two Canadian Soccer League teams have been named during an ever widening match fixing trial centering around Croatian ringleader Ante Sapina. Sapina, 35, along with Ivan Pavic, 29 (Croatian), Marijo Cvrtak, 35, (Croatian), Deniz Celik, 32, (Turkish), Ramazan Köse, 47 (Turkish) and Dragan Mihelic, 40 (Slovenian) have been facing lengthy sentences and are now co-operating with prosecutors in exchange for reduced sentences. Cvrtak gave evidence this week that implicated clubs from Croatia, Belgium, Hungary, Turkey and Slovenia. Most notably, at least for Canadians, Cvrtak named the CSL's Trois Rivierès and Toronto Croatia as two teams the gambling ring sought to fix. Specific details of which games and when were not reported at this time. When contacted by Metro News, the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) expressed shock at the revelation and promised action in the days ahead. "This is obviously new information to us. Neither the league or any individuals had alerted us to any alleged fixing but we take this very seriously and will be investigating it further," CSA Vice-President Victor Montagliani said. "Now that this is public we will have to sit down with the Canadian Soccer League and discuss it with them and determine what action, if any, is warranted." The CSA's Annual General Meeting is coming up in May and Montagliani added that he expected that this would be added to their agenda. Metro News has contacted the Ontario Soccer Association, CSL and Toronto Croatia. None were available for comment at the time of publishing.

It was reported today Toronto FC had released Nana Attakora, and while the news came as a shock to TFC supporters the most surprised was Attakora himself. “I was sick today. A bunch of us were…we picked up something on the plane ride back from Seattle and Dan (Gargan) and me and a few others didn’t show up to training today,” Attakora told Canadian Soccer News . Asked how it felt to learn he had been traded when he had in fact not been sent anywhere, Attakora laughed it off. “I’m not surprised. It happens all the time with you guys (the media.)” If there was a silver lining to the slip up, it was the news that the injury he had been nursing had healed and he was working on getting back to match fitness. “It feels good now. The problem is I haven’t really been able to train for the past two weeks so I need to get my fitness back up.” How long? “I’d give it a week.” So, given the mix-up and that he’s a week away from returning, let’s call it a good news day.

It’s Called Football has obtained a copy of a FIFA letter to the Canadian Soccer Association, threatening sanctions, possible suspension and expulsion regarding the Alberta Soccer Association and its proposal to remove certain bylaws from its constitution. You can read the full document here . But here is a quick excerpt: “We would like to draw your attention to the fact that in case the CSA fails to impose sanctions on the ASA should ASA remove the above-mentioned provision from the ASA By-Laws, FIFA would have no other option than to report the issue to the FIFA Association Committee which could propose to the FIFA Executive Committee to to impose sanctions on CSA. Such a sanction could lead to a suspension or up to an expulsion of the CSA.” If you need further background on what is going on and what this means for Canadian soccer you can read more at Canadian Soccer News .
