Arctic Monkeys
Album: Humbug
Label: Domino/Outside
Rating: *** 1/2
It’s a music cliché, but it’s on third albums where bands reinvent themselves. Scrappy Brit-rockers the Arctic Monkeys have done just that, creating their meatiest and darkest album yet. Unlike their past records, which saw the hyper-active foursome banging out indie pop hits, Humbug is a much sludgier, Sabbath-like affair. If some parts sound like they’re ripped from the Queens of the Stone Age playbook (Portion Approaching for one) it’s because that band’s frontman, Josh Homme, produced the disc. For the most part that union worked — the Monkey’s prove that they’re not just for indie rockers anymore.
