The court case of a provincial deputy sheriff accused of trying to smuggle drugs into prison was delayed yesterday.

Sheriff Tyrone David, 22, was arrested in October after allegedly completing a drug transaction with Kathleen Kierans. The 22-year-old Kierans is the girlfriend of well-known convicted criminal Jimmy Melvin Jr.

David and Kierans were due to appear in Dartmouth provincial court yesterday for election and plea, but their lawyers asked for more time to review evidence. They are scheduled to return to court on Dec. 16.

Police say they witnessed Kierans hand off drugs to David in the parking lot of a strip mall just a few minutes away from Dartmouth provincial court.
