Brent Andrews after taking an early hit.

The Halifax Mooseheads' senior-most veteran wasted no time helping the team's hot-shot rookie get acquainted with the QMJHL on Wednesday morning.

As the team broke camp at Cole Harbour Place, Yuri Cheremetiev decked Brent Andrews from behind into the boards. But it wasn't intentional according to Cheremetiev, a 20-year-old who tied for the team lead in scoring last season.

"Everyone needs a little welcome to the Q, but I didn't even know it was him," Cheremetiev said. "I was just trying to play the game and get my legs back. I was rusty."

The hit gave GM Cam Russell quite a scare in the press gallery overhead. Russell, of course, dealt 19-year-old defensive stalwart Gabriel O'Connor to land Andrews, a 6-foot-1 forward who plays a power game.

"We were a little worried about that," Russell said, "but he bounced back. He has good speed, tremendous work ethic and good strength."

Andrews said he was "a little bit sore, but I'm all right."

"It's a great pace out there," he said. "I was pretty nervous to start, but I just try to get out there and play my game. I felt pretty good once I got into it."
