Boudreau dominates midget ranks

Matthew Boudreau is leading the Quebec midget rankings in scoring with 29 points in 17 games.

The Halifax Mooseheads are a young team, but one of their youngest, brightest prospects isn't even on the roster -- centre Matthew Boudreau.

The slick 16-year-old, a third-round draft choice in June, was sent back to the Quebec midget AAA ranks out of training camp because the Mooseheads didn't want him in a part-time role in the QMJHL. And he's destroying the league, No. 1 in the scoring race with nine goals and 20 assists for 29 points in 17 games with Saint-Eustache.

The 5-foot-9, 149-pounder impressed in the QMJHL pre-season, particularly on the power play and in the shootout, and is certain of a roster spot next season.

Could he be on the verge of a call-up to the Mooseheads, perhaps during the mid-season trade period?

"You never know," said Mooseheads GM Cam Russell. "It depends what decisions we make at Christmas. The other side is, he’s having such a good year, the only way you bring him back here is if he’s a regular. There’s no benefit if he’s only in every second or third game."

Boudreau will likely represent Quebec at the world under-17 hockey challenge in December. Mooseheads forward Brent Andrews, as well as defence prospects Jamie Bishop and Trey Lewis, are good bets for Team Atlantic.

Maybe now is the time for Cam to consider going up stairs full time and bring in a new coaching staff for next year. It obviously hasn't worked for the last three years, so maybe a change is required.
