Jessyko Bernard snapped a 12-game goalless streak.
Stopping the Quebec Remparts is no easy task, and the Halifax Mooseheads could only get the job done for 50 minutes.
The Mooseheads were within one goal of the Remparts until the midpoint of the third period but surrendered a pair of backbreaking goals and ultimately lost 4-2 to Patrick Roy’s high-powered squad.
Maple Leafs draft choice Mikhail Stefanovich scored at 10:04 with an extra attacker on a delayed power play, while Thrashers pick Danick Paquette buried another one less than four minutes later.
“We didn’t have great D-zone coverage at certain times and when we didn’t, they capitalized,” said Mooseheads winger Jessyko Bernard. “They’re an offensive team, they have two full lines of drafted players, so you’ve got to be smart defensively against a good team like that.”
The Mooseheads struggled to generate offence for most of the night, up against backup goalie Jean-Philippe Gagnon. Carl Gelinas was the only player to break through while the game was within reach, tying it at 1-1 with 37 seconds left in the first. Jonathan Audy-Marchessault put the Remparts up for good at 12:20 of the second period.
When they did get chances, it wasn’t in the cards. Star sniper and captain Tomas Knotek misfired on a breakaway in the second and couldn’t get his stick on a number of golden scoring chances.
The Mooseheads went 0-for-5 on the power play, including three first-period chances that could have changed the game. They finished with just 26 shots to the Remparts’ 35 and were out-chanced 15-9.
“It was just one of those nights where we couldn’t get a bounce,” said Bernard, whose goal with 3:28 left on a nice feed from Brent Andrews was too little, too late. “I think we could have won that game but we didn’t capitalize when we had the power play.”
Bernard snapped a 12-game goalless, pointless streak.
“It felt great to get the monkey off my back, I hadn’t scored in a while, but I’d definitely take a win over that,” he said.
Goaltender Mathieu Corbeil was solid in a 32-save outing.
The last-place Mooseheads slipped to 5-21-2 and host the Bathurst Titan, 11-14-3, on Sunday at 4 p.m. It marks the return to the Metro Centre for five-year Moosehead Yuri Cheremetiev.
“We expect a W,” Bernard said.
Bedford’s Peter Delmas, the Remparts starting goalie, got the night off. He is playing through a hip injury and will be back in the net on Sunday when the Remparts visit the Saint John Sea Dogs.
