Cheap but chic

Wine fans know that the quest for great “bang for your buck” bottles is more about fun than finances. In fact, I’ve always said spending $100 on a wine is easy — finding one that tastes like it does for next to nothing is the challenge.

Ground zero for tasty quality juice at rock bottom prices is Argentina. I was there this past spring so I can testify to that fact as an expert witness with the wines from Finca Flichman as perfect evidence.

I tried a variety of different styles with Chief Winemaker Luis Cabral de Almeida and his introductory wines offer terrific value — particularly the 2007 Misterio Malbec ($7.95 – $13.95), which has the dark red fruit flavour and tongue-tingling pepper of a much more expensive malbec. Spain — the original Latin land of wine — also offers plenty of bargain vino with Castillo de Monséran’s 2008 Garnacha ($8.95 - $10.99), a smooth, ready to drink red with soft black cherry and ripe, sweet berry fruit.
