Confession time — I’m not that big a fan of the Olympics. Ever since they started letting professional athletes compete against other professional athletes, I’ve soured on the whole concept. That said; it is hard not to get swept up in the “Go Team Canada” vibe of these Winter Games.

Of course, hosting has its benefits. It’s an amazing opportunity to show where our talents lie (and I don’t mean just on the ice). Since British Columbia will see the brightest part of the spotlight, it’s also a chance for the rest of Canada to get a taste for the West. You can do it at home easily enough by raising a glass of B.C. wine.

Selection varies across the country with wines from Mission Hill Family Estate being some of the best and most readily available. Its 2006 Five Vineyards Cabernet Merlot VQA ($16.45 - $18.99) from the Okanagan Valley is a ripe mix of plum and cherry fruit that has a subtle Bordeaux vibe that pairs well with most red meats.

Sandhill Estate Vineyard’s 2006 Merlot VQA ($19.95 - $23.49) also calls the Okanagan home; showing off grilled beef-friendly flavours of dark red berry and cherry.
