Alex Cuba
Album: Alex Cuba
Label: Caracol
Rating: ***

This Cuban-born Canadian’s first two albums won Junos in the respected but commercially limiting “world recording of the year” category in 2006 and 2008. It’s doubtful, however, that Cuba (a.k.a. Alexis Puentes of Smithers, B.C.) will continue to toil away in artistic anonymity. Cuba co-wrote seven of the songs on Nelly Furtado’s new Spanish language album, Mi Plan, as well as performing a duet with the multi-million selling singer on one of the tracks.

So it’s fortuitous that Cuba releases his most pop-oriented album of his career just as Furtado starts skyrocketing up the Latin charts. Cuba has chosen to show off his considerable talents as a singer-songwriter on this record with 13 tracks (all but one in Spanish) all upbeat in character and positive in vibe. Cuba is an exceptional guitarist with the gift of Santana, but unfortunately his licks are too often relegated to quick flourishes and fills. Come on, Alex, stretch it out a bit.
