Ask most people about French food and they are likely to answer “fries.” In truth, our European cousins are connoisseurs of haute-cuisine, well-versed in the language of subtlety.

Those finely-tuned nuances rise to the forefront at Brussels Restaurant on Granville Street, where savory is forever the flavour-du-jour.

The Moules Provencale ($8.95) were both in season and splendidly sautéed with tones of tomato, basil and garlic.

Next up were the Coquilles Saint-Jacques aux Endives ($10.95), tinged with thyme and terrifically tender.

Lamb is always a challenge to prepare properly, but the Agneau a la Kriek ($27.95) was paradise, seared in a mild apricot beer sauce and shaded with a side of well-roasted vegetables.

What else could possibly put the finishing touch on a fine French meal other than a Belgian Waffle ($8.95)? Lightly coated with crème du Chantily, rich chocolate sauce and fresh fruit, an absolutely sinfulicious finale.  And, with over 100 types of domestic and imported beers on hand and a strong selection of local and foreign wines in the cellar, you won’t have any trouble finding an appropriate accompaniment to your meal.

Nobody does haute-cuisine like the French, and no one in Atlantic Canada does it better than Brussels.
