As the temperature drops, the political parties have begun to unveil their rival home heating plans for the winter.
Yesterday Darrell Dexter and the NDP released their new plan, which calls for a doubling of home heating assistance from $200 to $400. They’d also like to loosen the rules to have more people apply for assistance.
Currently, households making less than $25,000 per year are eligible, but Dexter would like to see that raised to $35,000.
“This will be the most expensive home heating season in our history. The price for heating oil will be 30 per cent more than last year,” said Dexter.
“We’re merely suggesting that they take some of that (energy) tax windfall and they give it back to the people who are going to need it most.”
Rather than comment on the NDP plan, Energy Minister Richard Hurlburt simply said the government would be going with its own energy plan instead.
That plan has yet to be revealed, but Hurlburt said it would be made public “very, very soon.”
“We’ll be doing our own plan, which we’ll be rolling out in the very near future. I think when Nova Scotians see our plan they’ll accept it with open arms,” said Hurlburt.
