Halifax will be welcoming to its port the USS Freedom, the American navy’s newest warship and first Littoral Combat Ship.
After being commissioned on Nov. 8 in Milwaukee, the USS Freedom’s maiden voyage is now underway with the ship currently in the Great Lakes region. It will be heading over to the East Coast next and will make a stop in Halifax sometime in the next couple of weeks.
An exact date hasn’t yet been made official.
Besides Halifax, other port visits for the USS Freedom include Buffalo, Montreal, Quebec City and Boston. The transit will conclude at Naval Amphibious Base in Little Creek, Va., where the ship will undergo year-long testing and evaluation.
The USS Freedom is optimized for littoral or coastal missions, focusing on high-speed maneuverability, agility and adaptability. It is capable of reaching speeds in excess of 40 knots and can operate in water less than 20 feet deep.
