More than a dozen employees of Casino Nova Scotia in Sydney have been told their jobs no longer exist, with a company spokesperson blaming a poor economy for the layoffs.

Howard Blank of the Great Canadian Gaming Corp., which owns and operates the Sydney and Halifax casinos, said the company has cut 16 or more part-time and full-time positions effective immediately.

The Sydney location employs 100 to 200 non-unionized employees, with adjustments made to suit the amount of business taking place at the facility, Blank said.

Great Canadian said it plans to make business viable across the country and has announced layoffs at other facilities, including some in Halifax over the last few months.

In April last year, the company announced more than 100 people would lose their jobs at Casino Nova Scotia in Halifax and that business hours would be reduced.

Blanks said the layoffs are in no way related to casino renovations or upgrades as they fall under a different area of the budget.
