Three people were hospitalized with swine flu in Nova Scotia this week, bringing the total number requiring hospitaization to four.
The province's health department said there's been an uptick around the globe of people reporting severe symptoms from swine flu, also known as Influenza A (H1N1).
So far in Nova Scotia the disease has acted like a normal flu virus. But chief medical officer Robert Strang has said officials do expect cases of hospitalization to occur.
There have been 151 lab-confirmed cases of swine flu in Nova Scotia, but the total number of people infected is not known. Medical staff continue to advise people to treat flu like symptoms as they normally would and only go to hospital if they feel it is necessary.
They also recommend washing hands often and thoroughly, using an arm to cover coughs and sneezes, and frequently disinfecting common surfaces such as doorknobs and counters.
