Fighting the funk has officially begun.
On Friday, the Halifax Regional Municipality announced Phase One of the Halifax Wastewater Treatment Facility recovery process is underway, which should slowly bring about an end to the strong stench that has plagued parts of the downtown waterfront for the past several months.
According to an HRM release, waste is now flowing into the facility again and screens are separating the “debris and floatables.”
“The first phase of the restoration effort will bring improved aesthetics into the harbour as well as a significant reduction of elimination or odours,” Halifax Water General Manager Carl Yates said in a release.
The waste treatment facility had been out of commission since Jan. 14, when a power outage allowed millions of litres in sewage to flood the $54-million plant, damaging the electrical systems. The goal remains to have the facility fully operational again by next spring.
