The Halifax Regional Municipality raked in the cash on the first night of its overnight winter parking ban – about $10,000 to be precise.
Halifax Regional Police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter said yesterday they estimate about 200 tickets were issued on the first night of the ban, which went into effect early yesterday and includes Halifax, Timberlea, Bedford, Dartmouth, Sackville, Cole Harbour, Fall River, Beaver Bank, Westphal and Eastern Passage.
Under the ban, a ticket of $50 can be issued to anyone parking on the street between 1 and 7 a.m. If the fine isn’t paid within 60 days, it goes up to $82.96.
In the event of a major snowstorm, the municipality can ticket or tow any vehicle that interferes with snow-clearing operations, regardless of time or date.
Residents are being asked to allow 12 hours after the end of the snowfall for crews to plow main roads and bus routes, and 24 hours for residential and rural streets.
