The first time was exciting, with so many nervous questions about what it would be like.
Halifax ended up loving the experience, and this weekend it went back for more.
“People seemed to really enjoy it (the first time),” said Mikey Singer, show manager of the second annual Everything to do with Sex Show at the Cunard Centre.
Last year’s inaugural show ended up being a big hit, and this year it almost doubled in size with 60 exhibitors.
“A lot of times when we come to a new city, everyone thinks we’re a pornography show,” Singer said. “But if you look around, we’re here for just about anything that has to do with sex.”
Patrons could browse lubes, leathers, toys and genital-shaped treats. Amongst overtly sexual booths for lingerie and body painting, there were less obvious exhibits like the Slice of Life Portrait Studio, which displayed smiling, wholesome family pictures.
There were also seminars on a range of sex topics, burlesque and fashion shows, and an S&M dungeon.
But while the size of the exhibit increased, the show struggled to top last year’s attendance numbers.
Organizers said bad weather hurt business on Friday, but it had been going strong since then.
Much of the crowd was of an older demographic. Saint Mary’s University student Kayla Flinn spent the weekend selling Orgasmatrons — sort of a spindly head massager —when she ran into her own parents.
“Yeah, my parents came. They were a little shocked and surprised, but they had fun,” she said.
The event is planned to return next year, to the delight of Brian Lockhard, who attended all three days.
“Some people are uncomfortable going into a regular adult sex shop for videos or lingerie or whatever,” he said.
“Here you’re surrounded by people and you don’t feel judged for what you’re even just contemplating doing.”
