Halifax regional council has thrown its support behind the introduction of two “Give-Away Weekends” in HRM.
Held twice a year in June and October, residents would be permitted to leave unwanted household items at the curb to be collected by anyone who wants or needs them.
Council voted unanimously last night to pass the proposal along to staff, who will examine its feasibility and return to council with a recommendation on whether to go ahead with the idea.
Coun. Gloria McCluskey, who put the motion forward, said the weekends would help divert trash from landfills. Ottawa and Winnipeg have already implemented similar programs, McCluskey said, and as long as the public is educated about the rules and etiquette surrounding the events, they have generally been a success.
“As they say, one person’s trash is another’s treasure,” she quipped.
But some councillors had reservations.
“If it’s not taken and stays on the sidewalk, then whose responsibility is it to pick it up?” asked Coun. Steve Streatch. “I just want to make sure we have all our I’s dotted and our T’s crossed.”
Leftovers
Council was told any leftover items would be picked up by municipal waste crews, but this hasn’t been a major problem in the other cities.
