Halifax Regional Police issued 144 tickets to drivers failing to yield to pedestrians last year.

That’s 53 fewer tickets than 2006, the year 16-year-old Mary-Beth Chaulk was struck in a crosswalk and killed.

But police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter said it’s difficult to draw conclusions from the numbers.

“They jumped up (to 258) in 2007 — is that because all of a sudden (due to) certain things it became more of an issue, and we started focusing on it? Very likely,” Palmeter said. “It’s hard to really say 100 per cent.”

The fine has also increased to $682, he added.

Palmeter said he’s sympathetic to people who think a fine is a light penalty for hitting a pedestrian, but added police only enforce the law.
