A record amount of calls regarding coyote sightings across Nova Scotia has prompted the province’s department of natural resources to release what it refers to as a reminder on how to discourage the animal from coming near your home.
Some precautions include keeping property free of unsecured garbage, making sure compost bins are secured and having small pets indoors or supervised when on a leash.
If a person encounters a coyote, the department advises to not feed, touch or photograph the animal, remain calm and back away slowly. If the animal shows signs of aggression, it’s suggested you act bigger and stronger. Should the animal attack you, the department suggests fighting back aggressively.
Department biologist Mike O’Brien advised the risk of being attacked and injury from coyotes is “extremely low.”
