A 45-year-old Ontario man appeared in Dartmouth provincial court Thursday after RCMP say they seized contraband smokes from a vehicle on Highway 102 near Miller Lake on Wednesday.

Police say members of the RCMP Custom and Excise Enforcement Section in Halifax seized 800 cartons of contraband cigarettes, which represent 160,000 tobacco sticks.

The seizure originated, police say, when the inbound vehicle was stopped for a motor-vehicle offence.

The man is charged under the Excise Act and  the Provincial Revenue Act.

Police say the investigation is continuing and more charges are possible.
