Police used pepper spray to break up a fight between several people on Brunswick Street early yesterday morning.

Halifax Regional Police were investigating a theft in the 1700 block area of Brunswick Street when they saw multiple people involved in a “physical disturbance” at 4:42 a.m. near the Palace Nightclub and Halifax Alehouse.

Police say the incident included several fights and bottles being thrown.

Police gave “verbal commands” for the altercation to stop and to clear the area but say the instructions were ignored. Police say that is when officers used pepper spray.

“The fight was continuing and we couldn’t disperse them any other way,” said police spokesman Sgt. Richard Gilroy. “Pepper spray seemed like an appropriate level of force.”

After the pepper spray was deployed, police say the participants dispersed immediately, although some were treated for minor injuries.

No charges are expected.
