A survey from Smoke-Free Nova Scotia claims tough laws on lighting up is curbing the habit for some Bridgewater residents.
Bridgewater’s Protection from Second-Hand Smoke bylaw that took effect in September 2008 applies to most town property such as parks, playgrounds and sports fields.
Due to this regulation — the first of the kind in the province — the survey says 12 per cent of people in Bridgewater are now trying to quit and one in three people who smoke say they now smoke less around children.
Smoke-Free Nova Scotia is a coalition of health groups across the province who are committed to a tobacco-free province.
The survey, conducted by Thinkwell Research, interviewed 301 adults from Sept. 17 to 21, 2009.
