The world famous Peggy’s Cove lighthouse is among the close to 1,000 lighthouses across Canada deemed surplus property by the federal government’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
According to the DFO website, it has declared 976 lighthouses — including about 480 active ones — as surplus to its needs and no longer wants them. A total of 138 lighthouses from Nova Scotia made the list, released by DFO late last month when its new Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act came into effect.
The DFO website says that individuals, cities or non-profit groups may apply for heritage designation of federally owned lighthouses. Owners would have to submit a business plan showing their use would be “economically viable over the long term, and that they have the capacity to manage the property.”
