As day three dawned, hundreds of fire evacuees were very worried about their pets left behind.

“That’s been one of our biggest issues, is pets, because people haven’t been able to get home since Friday when they left work,” said Ancel Langille of the Red Cross yesterday.

So when RCMP announced yesterday morning they would escort people into the evacuated area to retrieve pets and grab their medication, there was a lot of relief.

Amy Banks left five cats and two kittens at home in the Wonderland trailer park.

“I’m worried about them because we haven’t been home to check on them with the heat and the windows closed,” she said.

With iguana, dog, and kids, Alex Starr left her house on Friday.

“We live up behind the fire station, ironically, in Lake Echo,” she said.
