Corbeil second on NHL draft list

Mathieu Corbeil’s strong play in the Halifax Mooseheads’ net has turned the heads of NHL Central Scouting. The 18-year-old was ranked second among QMJHL goaltenders for the 2010 NHL draft yesterday. He’s put himself on the map in the past two weeks, winning back-to-back QMJHL defensive player of the week honours with a 4-1 record, a 1.40 goals-against average and a .957 save percentage. Ahead of Corbeil on Central Scouting’s list is Moncton Wildcats goaltender Louis Domingue, a member of last summer’s Canadian under-18 team. Domingue has a 2.50 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage in 17 starts. Defenceman Brandon Gormley of the Wildcats was ranked No. 1 among QMJHL skaters. Mooseheads rookie defenceman Konrad Abeltshauser checked in at No. 13. Although he is currently out of the lineup with a knee injury, he has been one of the team’s top blueliners and has two goals and eight assists in 17 games. Dartmouth’s Stephen MacAulay of the Saint John Sea Dogs also made the list at No. 18. The 6-foot-2 forward has two goals and nine assists for 11 points in 23 games.

The Halifax Mooseheads goaltender collected his second consecutive QMJHL defensive player of the week honour after backstopping his club to a pair of victories on the weekend. Corbeil was the first star in Friday's 2-1 win over the Moncton Wildcats, stopping 36 shots, and was solid in a 32-save 4-1 victory over the Baie-Comeau Drakkar on Saturday.
Moose top Drakkar for fourth straight win

Where did this come from? After losing 19 of their first 20 games, the Halifax Mooseheads have suddenly manufactured an impressive and unexpected four-game winning streak, their longest stretch of success in almost two years. The Mooseheads dumped the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 4-1 on Saturday night at the Metro Centre in the final stage of a four-game home-stand that might turn the last-place club’s season around. “It feels so good … Four games in a row, we’ve never had that before,” said forward Charles Bety. “We have confidence inside of us right now and it feels so great … We’ll just try to keep working hard.” The last time the Mooseheads won four straight was January 2008. They haven’t won five straight since November 2007. The Mooseheads, who have allowed just a single goal in all four victories, continued to play gritty, defensive hockey in front of goalie Mathieu Corbeil, who continued to back them up when called upon. The Mooseheads pounced on an opponent that had lost eight straight games coming in, scoring twice in the opening five minutes. Tomas Knotek beat Simon Giroux from between the circles at 2:03 and Charles Bety popped in a rebound of a Matt Stoddard shot at 3:07. “That was huge for us,” said defenceman Spencer Metcalfe. “We were talking about it in the room, we needed to have a good start and we did. Everyone played solid and everyone was confident.” Carl Gelinas struck for a pair later, sandwiching Simon Olsson’s goal for Baie-Comeau, and Corbeil made 32 saves. The Drakkar came hard at the Mooseheads in a rugged physical contest that saw four fights and 77 penalty minutes handed out. Mooseheads defenceman Steve Gillard was viciously crunched from behind by Guillaume Goulet in the first period and miraculously wasn’t injured. Goulet earned a match penalty for the infraction and will be suspended. Making the win that much more impressive was the fact the Mooseheads were without top defencemen Garrett Clarke and Konrad Abeltshauser --- both on the sidelines with knee injuries. “We have some solid D here,” Metcalfe said. “I think we’ll be OK until they get back, and hopefully they’ll be back soon.” With a 5-18-1 record, the Mooseheads have moved to within two points of crawling out of the QMJHL basement. The Drakkar are actually the team ahead of them in the standings, with a 5-16-3 record and 13 points. The Mooseheads are back in action Friday when they kick off a three-games-in-three-days road trip against the Montreal Junior.

Abeltshauser also has an ankle injury while Clarke is hobbled to the point of using crutches. Both 17-year-olds have logged top-four minutes when healthy.
Herd keeps rolling with win over Wildcats

The Halifax Mooseheads are making the most of a five-game homestand. The Mooseheads extended their modest winning streak to three games on Friday night at the Metro Centre, earning a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Moncton Wildcats before a crowd of 5,233 and adding to last weekend’s home triumphs over Val-d’Or and P.E.I. Second-year goaltender Mathieu Corbeil was named the first star for the third straight game, turning aside 36 of 37 shots, while Gerrad Grant was the second star with a goal and an assist. It was Halifax’s first three-game winning streak since February 2008, the days of Jakub Voracek and Brad Marchand. “That’s a big momentum-builder for us,” said Mooseheads defenceman Paul Dimitruk, who was picked up off waivers from the Wildcats earlier this season and earned third-star honours. “That’s a hell of a hockey team, the Moncton Wildcats. They’re probably one of the most complete teams we’ll see all year … And that’s a testament to our work ethic that we beat them.” The Wildcats opened the scoring at 15:35 of the first period with a power-play tally from defenceman Simon Jodoin, who pinched in from the point to bang a rebound past Corbeil. Grant, a Halifax native, ripped a bullet over the glove of Louis Domingue on a 2-on-1 with Tomas Knotek to tie the game just 94 seconds into the second period. The Mooseheads poured it on late in the second and 17-year-old defenceman Garrett Clarke scored the game-winner at 14:37 when he hammered home a slap shot from the point on a power play. From there, it was Corbeil and a gritty defensive effort that got the job done as the Wildcats pushed desperately for the equalizer. Dimitruk, Pascal Amyot and Steve Gillard did admirable work on the back end, logging the lion’s share of the ice time after an injury felled Konrad Abeltshauser and misconducts put Spencer Metcalfe and Garrett Clarke in the penalty box for 15-minute stretches. “That last 10 minutes was tough,” the 19-year-old Dimtruk said. “I was on the ice just trying not to screw up, trying to help my team get the victory and keep the momentum going. I logged a good chunk of ice time and I was gassed at the end, but it was a lot of fun.” Corbeil wasn’t as sensational as he needed to be the weekend before in wins over Val-d’Or and P.E.I., but he was rock-solid, shutting the door on 15 third-period shots and 18 dangerous shots overall. Basically, he was there when he needed to be, and that's a capability the Mooseheads have lacked in recent years. “He’s playing unbelievable,” Dimitruk said. “He’s bailed us out time after time. We’re absolutely riding on his back right now. He’s playing fantastic and I can’t say enough about his work ethic.” The Wildcats played without Russian star Kirill Kabanov, who has a wrist injury. The Mooseheads also benefited from the absence of top players in their previous two wins, with Benjamin Casavant sitting out for P.E.I. and Jonathan Hazen sidelined for Val-d’Or. The Mooseheads, 4-18-1 with nine points, host the Baie-Comeau Drakkar on Saturday in a pivotal contest. It’s a chance to make up ground on the second-to-last Drakkar, who are 5-15-3 with 13 points. “It’s a crucial game for us,” Dimitruk said. “We’re going to go full steam ahead, no matter how much we have left in the tank.”

The Halifax Mooseheads will likely be without two of their top defencemen on Saturday against the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Konrad Abeltshauser and Garrett Clarke, a pair of 17-year-old standouts who log a ton of ice time, both went down with knee injuries in Friday's 2-1 win over the Moncton Wildcats at the Metro Centre. Abeltshauser left the game in the first period and didn't return, while Clarke limped off in the final two minutes while play continued in his own zone. Mooseheads head coach Cam Russell said both need to be evaluated, but didn't expect to have either on Saturday. Clarke's injury appeared to be the more serious of the two, at least based on the pain he was in leaving the ice.
