The Memorial Cup host Shawinigan Cataractes took down the Halifax Mooseheads on Saturday afternoon in Quebec. Pelting rookie goaltender Zach Fucale with 40 shots and allowing just 15 against, the Cataractes scored twice into an empty net en route to a 5-2 win over the Mooseheads at Centre Bionest. Martin Frk scored the game's first goal on the power play just 4:14 in, but the Cataractes responded with tallies from Vincent Arseneau and Maximilien Le Sieur in the second half of the second period. Yannick Veilleux made it 3-1 just 2:44 into the third. Andrew Ryan closed the gap to a goal with 2:31 remaining but Veilleux and Le Sieur found the empty net in the final minute. Veteran defenseman Sawyer Hannay sat out his second straight game with an upper-body injury, while forward Brad Cuzner remained out with an illness. Rookie Nathan MacKinnon had an assist and a team-high three shots. The Mooseheads have three of a possible six points on the current four-game road trip (1-1-1) and wrap it up on Sunday at 5 p.m. against the Victoriaville Tigres.

The Halifax Mooseheads earned a big 4-1 win over the Chicoutimi Sagueneens on Friday night as they reached the halfway point of a difficult road trip through Quebec. Matthew Boudreau scored the game's first two goals -- one halfway through the first on the power play and another halfway through the second -- and Alexandre Grenier added his 20th of the season in the third to put Halifax up 3-0. Charles Hudon scored for the Sags with five minutes left and Darcy Ashley found the empty net with 46 seconds left. Mooseheads rookie goaltender Zach Fucale was the first star with 32 saves as the Sags had a 33-28 edge in shots. Boudreau was named the second star.
The Baie-Comeau Drakkar are off the hook for a controversial newspaper ad that ran this week surrounding Nathan MacKinnon's first visit to the small Quebec town. The half-page colour ad, which appeared in Plein Jour de Baie-Comeau, said "Venez encourager le Drakkar, votre equipe contre les Mooseheads et un joueur qui a fait le choix de ne pas venir a Baie-Comeau." Loosely translated, that means "come cheer on the Drakkar, your team against the Mooseheads and a player who made the choice to not come to Baie-Comeau." MacKinnon, 16, was drafted first overall by the Drakkar last June but wouldn't report to Baie-Comeau and ended up being traded to the Mooseheads in July. QMJHL spokesman Karl Jahnke told Metro Halifax on Thursday the Drakkar will not be disciplined for running the ad, but said the league has "spoken to the Drakkar about the matter." General managers Steve Ahern of the Drakkar and Cam Russell of the Mooseheads addressed it on News 95.7 on Wednesday night. Ahern said he had no knowledge of the ad before it ran, while Russell said it's "not something you need to do when you're talking about a 16-year-old kid. That's a lot of hate to put on him." The Drakkar, in front of a crowd of boo-birds, beat the Mooseheads 2-1 in a shootout on Wednesday. MacKinnon scored in the loss.

Nathan MacKinnon's first game in Baie-Comeau, Que., went in the host Drakkar's favour. The Drakkar, who drafted MacKinnon first overall last summer before trading him to the Mooseheads when he wouldn't report, earned a 2-1 shootout win before a booing crowd of 2,349 at Centre Henry Leonard on Wednesday. MacKinnon scored the game's opening goal 7:11 into the first period and finished with three shots — including a breakaway chance in overtime — and did not score on his shootout attempt. Baie-Comeau's Gabriel Verpaelst scored 33 seconds into the second period to tie the game 1-1. Tomas Filippi was the lone marksman in a five-round shootout, ending a night featuring strong performances from 16-year-old rookie goaltenders. Baie-Comeau's Philip Cadorette made 34 saves and Halifax's Zach Fucale stopped 35 shots. Mooseheads defenceman Sawyer Hannay aggravated an upper-body injury and missed the final two periods. There is no word yet on how much time he'll miss. Also of note, News 95.7 reported the Drakkar took out a full-page ad in a Baie-Comeau newspaper earlier this week trumpeting the return of MacKinnon. It's not clear exactly what the ad said, but Mooseheads general manager Cam Russell told News 95.7 he wasn't "very pleased with it." "I don’t think it’s something you need to do when you’re talking about a 16-year-old kid," Russell said. "That’s a lot of hate to put on him.” For more on MacKinnon's first game in Baie-Comeau, check out Thursday's edition of Metro.

Mooseheads 'didn't bring it' in loss to Titan

The Bathurst Titan didn’t need the QMJHL’s most prolific goal-scorer to stick it to the Halifax Mooseheads on Saturday night. After Zach O’Brien suffered a game-ending injury early in the second period, the Titan scored four times in the final 28 minutes to cruise to a decisive 5-1 win over the Mooseheads at the Metro Centre. The Mooseheads’ post-game self-assessment was blunt and likely echoed the thoughts of many among the 7,834 in attendance. “It’s pretty simple — they outworked us and out-battled us,” said defenceman Travis Randell. “We should be treating that as a playoff game — if the playoffs started today, they’re the team we’d be playing in the first round — and we just didn’t bring it.” The Mooseheads misfired on three first-period power-play attempts, including a one-minute, 57-second five-on-three, and it was all downhill from there. The Titan grabbed a 3-1 lead in the second period with even-strength goals from Mirko Hoefflin and Christophe Lalancette and a shorthanded tally by Adam Stevens. They finished them off in the third with another from Lalancette and a two-man power-play marker from Alex Jon Banville. The Titan’s abrasive style and tenacity in puck battles highlighted their impressive road effort. “When we play physical, we’re a lot better,” said Titan head coach Eric Dubois said. “We didn’t want to set the tone — we just wanted to play hard and have a good, hard effort.” Mooseheads captain Cameron Critchlow conceded the Mooseheads played a “perimeter game” but that they shouldn’t have been surprised the Titan would play them tough physically. “That’s to be expected when you play a team like that,” Critchlow said. “They’re a hard-working, gritty team and they took the two points from us tonight.” O’Brien, who had a league-leading 45 goals among 88 points in just 50 games coming into the game, left the game at 6:34 of the second period after a run-in with rugged Mooseheads defenceman Sawyer Hannay along the end boards. Dubois said O’Brien definitely suffered a broken nose but also said there is concern the star sniper has a concussion. He’ll be evaluated on Sunday. Dubois said Hannay “put a little extra push on O’Brien as he was losing his balance,” contributing to the damage. Dubois also said Guillaume Rousseau’s hit to the head on Nathan MacKinnon in the first period was “a clean hit” that “caught (MacKinnon) by surprise,” even though Rousseau received a five-minute major and a game misconduct. The lone highlight for Halifax was MacKinnon’s 25th goal of the season on a pretty passing play from Jonathan Drouin and Andrew Ryan. MacKinnon now has 61 points and tied Etienne Drapeau’s franchise record for most points by a 16-year-old. The Mooseheads, eighth overall at 28-17-5, play the next four games on the road starting Wednesday against the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.
