Watermelon Slim
Album: Escape from the Chicken Coop
Label: NorthernBlues
Rating: ***
You can’t get more authentic truck-driving music than this. Watermelon Slim (a.k.a. Bill Homans) was hauling industrial waste in Oklahoma before deciding a few years ago to devote himself full time to the blues (he’s also a Vietnam vet, a former newspaper reporter and a member of Mensa). Slim is a master of the slide guitar and harmonica and he plays the blues like he’s lived them. Escape from the Chicken Coop is his first venture into Nashville and he pulls it off with the same grit that he plays the blues. Slim delivers ten original odes to his fellow long-haulers, plus four covers including a sublimely gospel version of Roy Acuff’s Wreck on the Highway.
