The Cribs
Album: Ignore the Ignorant
Label: Warner
Rating: ****

The great big gob of feedback that appears somewhere around the eight second mark of the first track, signals one thing — Johnny Marr came to play. And play he does. The former Smiths’ guitarist’s signature sound flies all over this superb album from West Yorkshire alt-rock punks The Cribs.  There are moments on this album, especially the six-minute-long City of Bugs, that rival the  double guitar eloquence of Television’s new wave masterpiece Marquee Moon. And if you can’t take the feedback, there’s also the radio friendly Cheat on Me. It’s the perfect combination of British punk snarl and art school airs. Marr, best known in recent years for his work with Modest Mouse, has found a second home with The Cribs. This is not just a passing fancy. Marr has co-writing credits on each of the twelve tracks and is an acknowledged full member of the band. It’ll be interesting to see if Marr can keep both projects on the go.
