Bon Jovi
Album: The Circle
Label: Universal
Rating: **
True country fans can rejoice. Jon Bon Jovi has turned his back on them after reaping platinum profits from Lost Highway, his 2007 over-the-top foray into Nashville. Unfortunately, their loss is anthem rock’s gain as Jon Bon Jovi returns to his witless style of stadium rock that gave bandanas and mullets a bad name. He reaffirms his unchallenged ability to make even the freshest cliché sound stale. Who but Bon Jovi could sing a power anthem as profoundly titled as Live Before You Die? And no one but Bon Jovi would even think of building angst and social spirituality into a question like “what is the distance between a bullet and a gun?” (honest, check out track 5, Bullet). Mr. Springsteen, please let your fellow Jersey rocker know that working class doesn’t mean brain dead. It’s such a waste of a good guitarist. Still, it doesn’t matter. The Circle will sell a gazillion and Bon Jovi will be back on TV taking his rightful place as mentor to the American Idols.
