Norah Jones
Album: The Fall
Label: EMI
Rating: ***
A “fall” from grace? Certainly not as far as her fans are concerned. Norah Jones’ fourth album continues on the rootsy down-tempo path of its predecessors, her sometimes sultry, sometimes charming voice a perfect companion to an evening by the fire place or a wine-fueled dinner. The “fall” in the album title is probably more a fall from innocence, with many of the self-penned tunes stinging with the melancholy of breakup. Jones does, however, show she’s capable of being an outlaw rocker ala Steve Nicks on tracks like Young Blood and It’s Gonna Be. Also worthy of note are two co-writes, one with Ryan Adams (Light as a Feather) and the other with Okkervil River’s Will Sheff (Stuck).
