Jimmy Buffett
Album: Buffett Hotel
Label: Mailboat/Fontana North
Rating: ***
This is an impossible record to dislike, especially for the legions of Parrotheads out there. Buffett’s songwriting craft has lost none of its ability to go to the places that mean most to his fans and veering somewhat left of mid-life crisis. His wry wit shines though on A Lot to Drink About, a Buffett state-of-the-world address. He boils things down to essentials on Surfing in a Hurricane and Beautiful Swimmers. And when he reverts to cover other artists, he picks only the best — Bruce Cockburn (Life Short Call Now) and Jesse Winchester (Rhumba Man). Still, it’s not going to win him over many new fans.
